Reduction and control of carbon dioxide emissions is now a top priority for UK and European governments.
Carbon dioxide is one of a number of greenhouse gases contributing to global warming and climate change but is considered to be the major contributor.
Greenhouse gases trap heat within the earth’s atmosphere and cause a steady increase in global temperature.
Sources of carbon dioxide emissions include generation of electricity from fossil fuels.
The UK government is committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 60% by 2050 (based on 1990 levels).
Business organisations are a key part of the UK’s carbon reduction strategy as they account for a significant proportion of carbon dioxide emissions.
Large businesses are already obliged to take part in the European Union - Emissions Trading Scheme to manage their carbon dioxide emissions.
The government is planning to introduce new legislation in January 2010 which will involve approximately 4,000 medium – large businesses. This will be known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment and will oblige each business to purchase carbon allowances to meet their carbon dioxide emissions.
